a striking verse

I have been reading the Bible regularly for going on 14 years now. Yet, continually I read verses that I never remember reading. Recently I came across such a verse.

2 Samuel 14:14 (NIV)- “Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But God does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him.”

I believe this is one of those verses that I will read ten years from now and still be astounded.  In this context, David is conviced to bring back Absalom into his kingdom because he had banished him. This verse is an oddly placed theological statement. The woman who speaks it makes an association between David and God with the statement. I know that David is seen typologically but I am not quite sure how.  The way that God devised to bring back we who were banished is the One who said “I am the way”: Jesus.  David brings back Absalom whom he had previously banished.  But, Absalom then conspires to overthrow David.

It sounds like my life. God has brought be out of banishment and I continually try to dethrone him from my life. Thanks be to God for his continual mercy and the sufficiency of his sacrifice in Jesus who has saved me from banishment.
