schools and churches

I am a member of an organization called Berlin Area Ministries United (or BAMU…it sounds ridiculous, but it’s easier to say) by default because I am a minister in this area. We just had a meeting with the principles of the county’s schools and school board director. We asked them how we the churches could assist them with their role as educators. Their one request was mentoring. We expected requests financial and otherwise that we simply would not be able to meet, but they requested mentors: one hour a week, committed to one school year. This is a need the church ought to be able to address.

During the conversation we asked about the possibility of advertising in the schools for community events that the churches host (such as our community Harvest Fair in October). The school board director said the problem was not people opposing churches inviting people to their events, the problem is the other churches. In other words, if a church advertised something and you won’t let my church, then that’s not fair, and I’m gonna raise a stink over it.

I find it sad that churches would be able to be involved in the schools on a larger level, if it weren’t for other churches. The phrase “shooting yourself in the foot” comes to mind.

I was encouraged in many ways. Worcester county schools excel in academics. If these schools are open to help from the churches, then schools everywhere should be, especially in a time of diminishing resources.  If the churches could only come together instead of working against each other, we could have a tremendous positive impact in our community.
