Courage and Faith

Joshua rouses Israel to invade the promised land in chapter one of the book named after him.  He says, “be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

I have been challenged by this passage for many years since I first read it. There are endless implications and applications for the situations I face in life.  I was at the local high school Baccalaureate last night and someone read this passage. I was challenged anew by it and thought of something I’d never thought of before in relation to it:

You can only exercise courage when fear is present.

If the people of Israel weren’t afraid, then there would be no need to encourage them.  “En-Courage”!  Joshua was instilling courage within the people. Courage is that ability to face fear, to stare it down, and to obey God anyway.  This type of courage only comes with a deep understanding that God is sovereign and God is good. Not only is he in control, but he will do what is right.
