The Richest Man in Babylon – Part One

Recently I read “The Richest Man in Babylon” because it was recommended by a friend for reading in the area of personal financial management. I found it helpful in both its manner of communication through story, its historical origination in the ancient tablets of Babylon discovered in the 1800’s, and its profound yet simple truth.  Over the next few days I will share some thoughts that I enjoyed. Many are  quotes but I updated the “thee’s” and “thou’s”. Here are today’s thoughts:

The Man Who Desired Gold

  • If you have not acquired more than a bare existence in the years since we were youths, it is because you either have failed to learn the laws that govern the building of wealth, or else you do not observe them.
  • As for time, all men have it in abundance. You, each of you, have let slip by sufficient time to have made yourselves wealthy.
  • Fool! You pay everyone but yourself.
  • A part of all you earn is yours to keep. It should be not less than a tenth no matter how little you earn.
  • Every fool must learn but why trust the knowledge of a brickmaker about jewels?
  • Opportunity is a haughty goddess who wastes no time with those who are unprepared.
