The Richest man in babylon – part five

This is the conclusion of my comments of “The Richest Man in Babylon“.

The Gold Lender of Babylon:

  • If you desire to help your friend, do so in a way that will not bring your friend’s burdens upon yourself.
  • Better a little caution than a great regret.

The Walls of Babylon:

  • We cannot afford to be without adequate protection.

The Camel Trader of Babylon:

  • The soul of a free man looks at life as a series of problems to be solved and solves them, while the soul of a slave whines, ‘What can I do who am but a slave’.
  • Where the determination is, the way can be found.

I found this book very challenging and quite helpful as I look at the way I treat money in my own life. Now, I am a Christian and a churchman, so I believe there are other principles that ought to be included. I give a tenth of my income to the church. I also believe that I should give to other causes. So, for me, and arguably for all Christians, there are other obligations on our money that this text does not consider. The Christian’s concern with money should be with its ability to leverage it to impact others for eternity.  Now, money must be acquired before it can be leveraged and that is why I found value in this book.  It is always important to remember when considering these matters that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
