a great society

I recently read a Greek proverb in a book I was sent:

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they will never sit it.

If we want to make a lasting impact, we have to be willing to never see our impact. This concept is portrayed in words like integrity, character, devotion, fidelity, patriotism, resolve, mentor, father, mother, friend, confidant, and the like.  It is that thing in a person which grasps after transcendence and drives for success. It is what makes a family great, a town great, a people great, and a nation great.

This reminds me of a Chinese proverb:

“If you are thinking a year ahead, sow a seed. If you thinking ten years ahead, plant a tree. If you thinking one hundred years ahead, educate the people.”
