immigration

I have some friends who are in the process of becoming US citizens. I have helped them at a couple points in the process. What a process it is! I recently spoke to them and they told me they have to send Immigration a second check for $4400.  The amount of paperwork they have had to fill out is obscene.  They have been working on this process for more than two years and by the time it is over, it will have cost the family of four more than $10,000.

It’s no wonder some people do not seek to become legal citizens in the US. How can the average immigrant come up with that amount of money?  Additionally, all of the paperwork is in English. Some would argue that they should learn English anyways, but it is still government paperwork. I would venture to say that the average native speaker could not understand it.

Actually knowing someone going through the process of becoming a citizen has changed my views on immigration and illegal aliens. I think that it’s a lot easier to be an illegal alien and some who want to be citizens cannot afford it, nor search their way through the process that is like walking through dense fog.

Additionally, see if you can answer these questions taken from the government website:

  • Name one war fought by the United States in the 1900s.
  • What did Susan B. Anthony do?
  • What is one thing Benjamin Franklin is famous for?
  • There were 13 original states. Name three.
  • What is one responsibility that is only for United States citizens?
  • What does the judicial branch do?
  • Name your U.S. Representative.
  • Who makes federal laws?
  • What does the Constitution do?
  • What is the supreme law of the land?
