Jesus as Mentor

My blog on the value of mentoring explained that mentoring is an intentional interpersonal investment. I thought it would be beneficial to follow up with how Jesus models this for us.  It is important to point out that Jesus is not simply a model to follow, or a good moral teacher, although he may be those things, he is the Son of God, crucified, risen, and he is the object and subject of our worship.

Having said this, we can now look at his model of mentoring.  First, Jesus called out his disciples intentionally. He specifically called them out by name and told them, “I will make you fishers of men”. He knew exactly what he was doing with this rag-tag group of guys.

Secondly, he focused his teaching and his life on these 12 men.  Certainly he impacted many more throughout his lifetime, but those he walked with, ate with, drank with, and lived with were the twelve. He did more than simply teach moral principles. In the Sermon on the Mount he taught them and the others gathered that the Kingdom of God is applicable and relevant to every aspect of life from prayer, to sex, to worry. Jesus modeled this teaching with his life. His teaching was to help the people who followed him live in the Kingdom. His focus was on people, not on mere principles.

Lastly, Jesus intentionally invested in these 12 men.  He knew that his time and teaching with them would pay eternal dividends. 11 of these 12 went on to change the world and all but one of those 11 were killed for proclaiming the message of Christ. More than this, Jesus invested in the whole world. He gave his life has a sacrificial offering for the sins of men and women. Our identification with him in his death procures our identification with him in eternal life. Jesus has invested in us eternally, and now he asks us to invest this good news in others.
