I have been thinking about person discipline quite a bit lately. I am speaking of what is often known as personal or spiritual disciplines. By “discipline” I mean one’s pursuit of order in one’s own life; life management or personal management in many ways.  A life without order and boundaries is a life of chaos.  Persons who live chaotic lives are everywhere and I have no desire to live that way. However, I do not advocate a life of asceticism. I have established goals in my life and achieving these goals requires discipline. I have relationships in my life with my wife, my kids, my church, my friends, my family, that I want to develop and protect. Some things in life must be sacrificed in order to obtain other things. In other words, it is up to me to decide who and what gets cheated in my life and schedule. This requires discipline.

A book that has greatly impacted my life is “Disciplines of a Godly Man” by R. Kent Hughes.  I’m going to interact with this book again in a series of blog posts. After the Tiger Woods incident, I feel like it is a good time for me to revisit these things personally.  I hope you benefit from it as well.

I have read some other excellent books on this topic, here are a few that I recommend:

Whitney – Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian life

Foster – Celebration of Discipline

Willard – The Spirit of the Disciplines

Sanders – Spiritual Leadership

Stanley – Choosing to Cheat

MacDonald – Ordering your Private World
