a “snow-votional” thought for Sunday

We had to cancel our Sunday morning services at SonRise today because of the snowSnow has a way of stopping all of our plans. Whether we intended on going to church, or out to lunch, or any number of other things, 9-10 inches of snow basically stops our plans in their tracks.  Job 37:6-7 says, “He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’ So that all men he has made may know his work, he stops every man from his labor.”  In my understanding, when weather thwarts our plans or hinders our activities, it should cause us to pause and recognize God’s awesome ability to work his plan regardless of what we have planned.

We can find rest in the goodness of his plan and security in the strength of his plan. Isaiah speaks concerning God’s plan in Isaiah 1:18, “Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”  It is God’s powerful plan that has worked through Jesus to bring forgiveness from our sin.  If you are like me and realize that you are inclined to turn away from God in your actions and thoughts, snow is a reminder that because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, God has removed the penalty of my sin and now sees me as pure as the newly fallen snow.  And, just as there is enough snow to cover my house, my yard, my neighborhood, and even the whole town, God’s forgiveness in great enough to cover all my sin, and even all the sin of humanity.

These are important truths to remember every day, but the snow is a beautiful reminder.
