Sunday Recap for May 2, 2010

We had great services this week at SonRise! I heard from several church members that Pastor Daryl delivered a challenging sermon about taking up the cross. I haven’t watched the video yet, but its on my schedule this week!

This was our second service at the West OC site this Sunday. We had 42 people and one guest who doesn’t attend church anywhere else. This is a continuation of a great start!  We will be putting up signs soon, I am just waiting for them to be printed

We are planning our first event in the community on Saturday, May 15th.  We will set up a yard sale at the site, there on Route 50. When people come to get stuff, we will give it away rather than asking them to pay for anything. This is a simple way that we can give back to the community and help those in need.  We are asking church members to bring the stuff they want to give away and to work the event so we can make some connections with people who live in the area.  We are planning to have the event from 7 am-11 am. If you want to get involved, click on the link at the top right of the page and email me!

We began a series called Essential Philippians this week. We are looking at some of the essential concepts in the book and this week we saw in chapter 1 how the Gospel gives joy, even in suffering. Paul wrote this book from the confines of prison where he was under great suffering and yet he continued in joy. His joy was not found in his situation or circumstance, but in the knowledge of the Gospel. For us, if we attempt to find joy in temporal or fading things, it will pass, but if we find our joy in the Gospel, then whatever comes our way, whether suffering or abundance, our joy will remain. Also, there is an understanding of the Gospel that only suffering can bring about. Those of us who sit in a place of blessing and abundance should thank God for that, but also humbly realize that our joy is not in that place, but also in the Gospel. If we do this, when suffering inevitably comes, we will also be able to say Philippians 1:21, “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain”.  Whatever comes to our lives, we can find our joy in the Gospel because God is carrying his work to completion in our lives (Philippians 1:6).
