Sunday recap for May 16, 2010

Our fourth Sunday at the new site of SonRise in West Ocean City was another great day!  On Saturday we had our first outreach and we were able to connect with around 100-150 people. Also, a partner church, Nuevo Amanecer, joined us to connect with the spanish speaking among the crowd. They probably connected with as many folks as we did. All in all, it was a good time, a beautiful day, and a great opportunity to serve our community.

Part of the reason we do outreaches is to invite people to church and we had 4 new people come to SonRise West OC yesterday!  Also, we got our new drums set up, so it took the music up a few notches yesterday!

I preached from Philippians 3 in our series Essential Philippians. The essential concept for this week is The Gospel Gives Life! In this chapter, the Apostle Paul explains that our confidence in life is not in the things we can accomplish, but in God’s grace poured out on us through Jesus His Son.  Paul also tells us that our main pursuit, our main direction, our main goal in life should be seeking after Jesus with everything we have and everything we are.  It is in this that we find life. Just as Jesus said, “for whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?” We often seek God’s direction, God’s will, God’s guidance, but more than this we should be sure we are first seeking God Himself.  The Gospel makes a difference in our lives today as much as it makes a difference in our eternities. So many of us try to squeeze everything out of life that we can, but it is only in living through the Gospel of Jesus that we get everything God designed life to be for us. Many of us struggle with knowing how it applies in every situation of life. This is why we are to follow the example of others as Paul teaches in the end of chapter 3.  There are people in our church who “get it”. They aren’t perfect, but they know the Gospel and they know how important it is for every aspect of life. We are encouraged to model our lives after these people, because they will point us to Jesus.

We wrap up the series this Sunday with Philippians 4. Be there and bring someone with you, you won’t want to miss it!
