Sunday Recap for June 20, 2010

We had another great day at SonRise West OC.  We had NINE visitors today which is awesome!  We only have one more week of our Dangerous Questions Sermon Series. Be there next week to catch the finale!

Today we looked at the Dangerous Question Jesus asks his disciples in Mark 6.  He asks them, “How many loaves do you have?”  When Jesus looks at this sea of more than 5000 people he is moved with compassion for them. Because of his compassion he begins to teach them…all day long…on all kinds of subjects.  For some, that doesn’t sound very compassionate.  Teaching people the Gospel of Jesus is result of compassion. Without telling people about the abundant and eternal life offered in Christ, our compassion is deficient.  Jesus’s compassion also moved him to meet the physical needs of the people.  The problem was that the disciples didn’t have anything to feed them.  This is where Jesus asks the Dangerous Question. All they were able to find were a few loaves of bread and some fish. But, Jesus has been making something out of nothing since the beginning. He did it in creation through speaking, he brought a whole nation out of a man named Abraham who didn’t even have any kids at the time, he took a prisoner named Joseph and made him administrator over Egypt. God is in the business of making much out of little and making everything out of nothing. So Jesus multiplied the fish and loaves and everyone ate their fill and took home doggy bags.  The Dangerous Question applies to us as well, What do you have? He doesn’t ask for more than we have, but God does ask for all of us. He is able to take the piece that we offer him and multiply it for the multitudes. This is where obedience and compassion meet. We may only play a small part, but in our obedience God multiplies it to have an eternal impact on untold numbers of people. So let us each offer what we have and show true compassion through teaching about the Gospel and meeting people’s needs.
