Sunday Recap for August 15, 2010

Today at SonRise we observed the Lord’s Supper in the service. We try to do this a few times a year, but this was the first time we have done it at the new site in West OC.  We looked at 1 Corinthians 11:23-32 and talked about three instructions that we are given in regards to the Lord’s Supper. First, we are told to remember. Our remembering is not merely reminiscing however. We remember what Christ accomplished for us long ago, but we also remember that it is powerful and effective for us today.  The fact that Jesus died for our sins and rose again has profound implications in our lives today. When we suffer, we remember that Jesus also suffered for us and so we can find joy in the Gospel. When we lack, we remember that God has given us everything we need for life and godliness in Christ. When we have relationship problems, we remember that God humbled himself and reconciled the world to himself in Christ.  Every situation in life and aspect of life is affected by the Gospel. We remember that God no longer holds our sin against us but has paid the penalty we owed.  We remember that God has ransomed us, adopted us, and seated us with Christ in heavenly places. We remember how God has poured out his grace and mercy upon us due to his good pleasure and in no way because we deserved it.  The Lord’s Supper causes us to remember.  It also causes us to examine ourselves. We proclaim the Gospel when we  join together in taking the Lord’s Supper so whatever is in our life that is contrary to the Gospel must be repented of.  In this passage in 1 Corinthians, Paul tells us the reason some are sick and some have even died, is because they did not properly consider Christ when taking the bread and wine. We should have regular times of examination and reflection to ask God to purge us of our sin, but especially before the table of the Lord. Lastly, we partake. We join together as the body of Christ and as brothers and sisters drink and eat of the body and blood of Christ.  It is life to us for Jesus declared himself the way, truth, and life. It is good for the church to practice this observance of our Lord.

We believe that Jesus instituted two ceremonies or ordinances for his church: the Lord’s Supper and Baptism. The church has done this, and still does this in many ways, but when we partake we engage with 2000 years of people worshiping our Lord in this way.

    Lord’s Supper… baptism… what about foot washing?

I don’t see in Scripture where Jesus commanded his followers to continue that practice. I also don’t see that practice continued by his disciples.

    What about John 13:14-15?

I think the work “example” in v15 is important. We are commanded to serve one another, but foot washing isn’t the requirement, service is. Also, in Paul’s recounting of this passage in 1 Corinthians 11 he doesn’t mention foot washing. Do you guys practice this? I don’t have a problem with it, I just don’t consider it an ordinance.

No, I was just giving you a hard time. 🙂

Actually, Mennonites do consider foot washing an ordinance, but at CrossWay we understand it as you have explained–that it’s about service, not a literal foot-washing ceremony. Not everyone in the church agrees with this view, but I’m sure Jesus cares more about us following His example of service than He does about actual foot washing.

Just trying to pry out your thoughts!

I thought they did, so it’s interesting to me that you defer on that and still associate denominationally. I welcome and appreciate the discussion and debate!
