Sunday recap for September 19, 2010

It was Bike Week in Ocean City this week but unfortunately the only person who rode a bike to our church was our worship leader Adam, and he rides a scooter. We had a great Sunday nonetheless!  We are doing a two-week sermon series called Games People Play. Today we talked about the game Jenga. I really don’t like this game at all. You have to have a good table to play on because if it’s wobbly it will knock the tower over.  This is a good illustration of our lives too. We have to have a good foundation or no matter how high you build, it will come down with a crash.  Jesus gives some similar advice in Matthew 7: 24-27

24“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

Jesus has just finished with the Sermon on the Mount in chapters 5-7.  He is telling us how life in the Kingdom of God works. For those of us who believe in Jesus, life works differently and he is explaining how and why.  We all center our lives around something whether work or entertainment or relationships. It is good to make these things parts of our lives, but we should be careful to center our lives on Jesus Christ and the foundation he has laid for us. Building the “house” of our life upon anything else will cause it to crash when life’s inevitable storms come.  Make sure your life is centered on, built upon, focused upon Jesus.

You should be able to hear the sermon here in a couple of days.
